Beginning Plotting 101

Since March officially starts the beginning of Spring, I thought I’d share this “W” chart that helps writers plot the action in a story. Down, down, up, up, down, down, up! Give your readers a rollercoaster of a ride!

A: Start of book. Establish main characters. State goals for hero and heroine. Get them together as soon as possible.

B: First barrier to attainment of goals. Confrontation? Things don’t look so rosy anymore.

C: First low point for both characters. This action can happen in the same chapter.

D: Whew! Barrier to goals drops temporarily. Things are looking up! A good time for a kiss.

E: A high point. Yes! Some goals are accomplished and life is good.

F: Then... Boom! The rug is unexpectedly pulled out from under the hero and heroine. Bad news for both.

G: Low point again. Catastrophe! The sky has fallen! Will the sun ever shine again?

H: Things improve, then there’s a setback. Uncertainly reigns. Will they or won’t they resolve their differences? High, low. High, low.

I: Resolution of conflict! All loose ends tied up. Attainment of goals! A happy ending!
